Yep, 497 ppi will give you a nice image. If your scan is that high res, you can go to about 8x10 as well where you'll be at around 300, but don't allow Photoshop to resample. That's frequently the case, although I usually let auto levels have a go at it, then, if it degrades the image, I just undo it and go back and do levels myself. Auto levels seems to work best on conventional pictures, such as landscapes with neutral foregrounds and blue sky backgrounds. But sometimes it can be a good starting point..
