Several hundred screws (pointy side out) per tire work surprisingly well. http://mondociclismo.blogspot.com/2009/02/messengers-do-it-on-ice.html The biggest problem is flat tires. One can pay big bucks to have tires pre-screwed, but most buy very cheap tires and do it themselves. Some of them have been experimenting for years on patterns and numbers of screws per tire (often front and rear are different).
