There was a thread here sometime in the last few days about
setting white balance in stage-lighting conditions. I didn't pay
that much attention and have deleted the thread. But this evening
I was perusing the current issue of Outdoor Photography and
noticed an ad for "the missing link in digital photography."
The link is here: http://www.lallyphotography.com/store/
The "missing link" looks like a miniature shower cap - a piece of
flexible plastic with an elastic collar that you would fit over
the front of a lens. Actually, even more than a shower cap, it
reminds me of the elasticized plastic cover you might buy to place
over a small dish of left-overs in the refrigerator. But
presumably the optical transmission of this particular plastic
makes it particularly suited for the purpose of establishing a
custom white balance in any lighting conditions. The material/
construction is such that you could tuck it into a pocket or
corner of your camera bag. Or use it as a soft lens cap while your
camera is in the bag...
The concept makes sense. I leave it to you to decide if it is
worth the $29 +$3 S&H. If someone does try it, I wold be
interested in your assessment of the results.
IF the cap presents a truly white appearance to the sensor, it seems
like it would work. The important thing is that it takes up so little
space. But then so does a sheet of paper, at $0.0012 per copy, vs. $32
for a shower cap.
When I was a practicing pyrotechnician (1990 - 1997) we tried using
shower caps to cover the mortar tubes both before and after they were
loaded, with little success. One day in the sun and they started to
become brittle and the elastic stretched. In no case could they be
used the next year, and had to be thrown away. We eventually went to
sheets of visqueen (poly sheeting) to cover everything until the tubes
were loaded, then used aluminum foil to cap them off.
Neither of which would give you a white to balance with, however.
