Talk about care & feeding.....

To do the 600mm FA 'correctly' you need to invest in a capable tripod - $500 to $750.
A gimbaled head $450 to 500.
A transport system - $250 to $300. (Backpack carrier/bag).

But its all worth it IMO ! I've gotten some world class images with mine, that are impossible with lesser equipment. Finally no excuses.

What you really need is a FA* 600/4 :-)

And don't forget someone to carry it.

I've been kind of semi-looking, although I can't afford it right now.

Oddly enough, I did find an "in stock" listing for a Pentax 6x7 800mm f/4, although I can afford that even less than any FA* 600/4 I've seen.

Not really the cost of the lens, but the up-keep - buying feed for the required pack mule and all that. ;-D

More seriously, I think Sigma's 500mm f/4.5 lens is a more reasonable aspiration, mainly because I expect to be able to find one if I ever have the money.
