Sounds like it needs a vacation at Pentax Colorado. You could try
taking the battery out and letting it sit for a few days, then
reinstalling the battery. That will reset everything. But I suspect
that a repair is necessary.

He's tried updating the firmware, and reseting the camera's
settings, to no avail. It happens with several different lenses,
with SR turned on and with it off.
Has anyone had this happen before?
