It is a shame, but I guess the harsh truth is that the products they make
were not meeting the market needs/wants.

Like Joe, I have a Rolleicord in the closet, and I haven't shot anything
with it for several years (although I have taken it out and exercised the
shutter from time to time). I first used one between 1967 and 1969, which
was my first experience of MF: I loved those big negatives, but it took a
while to get used to the viewfinder. Couldn't resist buying another one
when the chance arose, some time around 1990.
Using old cameras can really take one back: one of my grand-daughters is
starting to be taught how to use film at school, with a K1000, and it's been
fun showing her how to use it properly: no autofocus, no auto-exposure, no
built-in flash - you really do have to think about everything before
pressing the shutter.

I still have an old Rolleicord in my closet. Back when I bought it used
about 1969 or 70 I couldn't afford a used 'flex model. The last time I
used it was on a trip to Italy in 1991. The shutter needs work now and
I'll probably never use it again, but I can't bring myself to part with it.
