Some of you may have noticed the press reports about the loss of our historical municipal archive on monday when its building collapsed, aaparently due to nearby subway construction. Two people are still unaccounted for and feared dead below the rubble. All this less than a mile from our place. Not to worry though, we're safe here.
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/europe/article5846343.ece But its not only the archive building itself. A number of residential buildings in the immediate vicinity, although looking intact at first sight, have been declared unsafe and will be demolished. The head of the local fire brigade stated it would be too dangerous to allow anyone inside and if it were only for the time needed to rescue some personal valuables or memories. This guy... http://www.cosimoerario.com/ ...lived next door, luckily escaped unscathed but lost all his instruments and personal belongings when they had to tear down what remained of his house. Made me think what it would do to me to see my negs, files and sound recordings destroyed before my very eyes. Goosebumps, lump in throat, long hard thinking... Long story short: I'll store copies of all my valuable (well, at least they are to me) files at a friend's place. In return, I'll make some room in my basement for copies of his stuff. You might want to think about something like this, as well. Ralf -- Ralf R. Radermacher - DL9KCG - Köln/Cologne, Germany NEW! Blog: http://the-real-fotoralf.blogspot.com NEW!
