Not a clue, but it looks like Norton is actively trying to keep people
in the dark when it comes to PIFTS.exe. And that tells me that it's
doing something you wouldn't like. Best to rid yourself of Norton
entirely.

I've done that already, and installed AVG.
Ran the little removal tool that one of you good people (Dave?) pointed me to. Interstingly, after doing all that, I had to reinstall a bunch of Windows components, NetFramework being the biggie because they had become corrupted. I now believe that my computer problem was because of something Norton did to the architecture of my operating system, based on what I've read on the net while researching this, what my guy at the computer shop has told me and my own having to reinstall a bunch of Windows stuff. If you do remove Norton and suddenly get a boot into safe mode and an alarm that "mcvcr71.dll" cannot be found, there is a good chance that you'll need to reinstall NetFramework 1.1 or some such. I am now completely convinced that Norton is to computers what UPS is to parcel delivery services.

Other than stinking up my toilet, I can't think of a single thing that Brown does for me.
