They are shipped dry, they are returned wet. it's the weight of the fluid
that makes the used columns so heavy.
They hold a surprising amout of fluid.
Essentially water at about 8 lbs/gallon. The column volume is just about 5
gallons, so it should weigh 40 pounds more when full of liquid.
It gains more than 40 pounds ... a LOT MORE than 40 pounds.
I think you'll find the SG of bleach fix and fixer to be somewhat more than
that of water, and it wouldn't surprise me if the weight of the recovered
silver is greater than the weight of the sacrificial metal. But they do
weigh a whole lot when being shipped. IIRC, ours scaled out at ~72 pounds
shipping weight. I don't know what they weighed coming in, probably in the
20-25 pound range.
