It might not be criminal but it is certainly not nice.

I have to agree with you here, Ann. The thing about it (other than
the fact that it's possibly mildly toxic as well as annoying for the
dog) is that the animal has no choice in the matter. A human can
weigh the pros and cons and decide if they want to do it; the dog
obviously has no say, so to impose something like that on it just
isn't fair, IMHO.

Dogs = Slaves.
It's a pretty simple concept.
Most of the students I got in my obedience classes were people who didn't understand the concept of living beings as chattel. Try giving a dog democratic rights within your household and see how long it takes for your home life to become hell on earth.
There are a lot of things that dogs find annoying.
My dogs don't like having their nails trimmed, but if I don't want their pasterns broken down and them limping like cripples, I need to do it a couple of times a week. I have yet to find a way to make them enjoy this process, the best I get is long suffering endurance. Dying a dogs coat, providing it is done with safe for dogs food based dyes is not harmful to the dog, and if the process of doing it is made fun and profitable for them, they enjoy it and don't suffer any self esteem issues either.
