I've been using the Sigma 70-200 EX Apo for nearly two years and I'm very pleased with it. It's pretty well my favorite lens. I'd been using the Pentax 28-200/3.8-5.6, and there's no comparison, in build quality, or picture quality. You'll find the Sigma to easily equal or exceed your 'A' lens in both areas, plus the extra stop is great, and it works well with a 2x converter. Mind you, it is big and heavy, but I rarely leave home without it.
