On 22/3/09, Bob W, discombobulated, unleashed:

>I guess I have to drop by Watlington Hill then. How far is it from the
>Thames? I need to do the next bit of my Thames walk soon, so perhaps I can
>make a detour, and I hope we'll also be able to catch up.

The kites were reintroduced to the area about 10 years ago - I was
fortunate enough to do some filming when the RSPB introduced some
breeding pairs, and filmed one of the nests with young in it. Fantastic
stuff. Now, they are readily seen anywhere in the Chilterns, from sw of
Luton, down to ne of Reading, over towards Wallingford, back up around
Aylesbury. If you walk through Henley, you'll see some. They do tend to
sail around towns, looking for scraps and detritus. Lovely site. I've
seen crows doing battle with singleton kites, chasing them off for
nuisance value. They soar very low, easily down to 20 or 30 feet and are
quite a spectacle.
