It's a subject you feel strongly about, but the pictures look hesitant, diffident and lacking in confidence. To get your message across you need to get right in among the tents, and interacting with more people. It may take quite a long time and many visits to build that level of confidence and trust from the people there, but it's the kind of dedication the people deserve, and probably the best way to get the pictures you want, and to tell us what you want to tell us. You have chosen a difficult subject, but if you want to do it justice that's what you have to do.
For inspiration perhaps you could read about other women photographers, such as Mary Ellen Mark and Eve Arnold who have worked under difficult conditions. There's nothing wrong in taking someone with you, if that's what you need. It's certainly what I've done in difficult circumstances. Bob ============= All good advice. But Sacramento is often hot (it was pretty warm yesterday) and about an hour and a half (hour and 15 minutes without getting off freeway) from me. And traffic during commute hours is terrible. So it's not a place I would go often. I'd rather find homeless nearby. And I'd be more comfortable in my own area. I am going to keep looking around here to see what I can see. But finding a small tent city here might be tough. Peter, now gone, was one of the ones that was adament that the homeless guy I showed (the second one) was a professional. I didn't mind interacting one-on-one with Richard, but a group around a car, that MIGHT be doing drugs put me off. (Richard mentioned one area of camp did, and I couldn't remember which area he said.) So I am debating with myself how much I want to pursue this. I do feel we shouldn't hide our heads in the sand. And I do want to show, now and then, what is going on.
