Of course, the FA 28-70 4.0 shows some barrel distortion at the 28 mm.
end and slightly pincushion at 70 mm.
It hasn't been a great problem for me so far, as I don't find it very
noticeable for general photography, but your mileage may vary.
But it is a great lens, reasonably fast for a zoom, much better than the
average "consumer" zoom, and it is in the low part of Philip's budget.
He may even use the rest of the money to buy another lens, or lots of
film, or whatever he needs.
The Tokina is also a good buy, but it is quite bulky and heavy (but
faster and more solid, of course).
In his case I would avoid the Sigma EX 28-70 mm. 2.8 I don't know about
the newer DF version, but the former is not very well built, not as
sharp as the inexpensive Pentax we are talking about, and the worst
thing is that it flares much more than the Pentax, which is excellent in
this area.
