I have shot a few gala events - the pricing I used was based on an hourly rate - in the end I gave them a flat price with copies of all images shot (after my culling). I would probably charge about $125 per hour. Find out about how long the event is and go from there. At least out where I am, they would really rather deal with a known price than deal with hours X rate. It is easier on the bookkeeping.
