In PS CS2, I
- create a curves adjustment layer
- drag the histogram curve line down about 25% on the third line
- set the brush to a large, soft-edged area
- paint in black on the mask leaving only the desired edges/corners
with the adjustment
- set the layer transfer mode as luminance only
