They aren't.

The are an introduced species that bred like you-know-what & thrived.
In the past numbers in plague proportions were quite a problem for the
grain growers.

Lots of effort over the years has gone into containing & killing them.

They introduced a virus into the rabbit population some years ago that
put a dent in their numbers. However I heard recently the the virus is
losing it's potency (or the rabbits are adapting) & numbers may be on
the rise.
