I mentioned to my local calera seller yesterday that I had heard an opinion
from one of the Boffins on the mail list I inhabit that there was a
possibility that my lens was defective.
It happened that they had a second one in stock, so I was given the offer of
bringing my lens in for an exchange if the lens on the shelf turned out to
be a better performer.
Today we compared the two lenses, and they were as close to identical in AF
speed as we could determine without using a stopwatch.
It looks like I have a "good copy" of the lens, but the lens itself isn't
good for AF speed.
OTOH, the glass itself is superb. If we ever get a nice day that coincides
with a day off, I might just take my herd of 50mm lenses out and see which
one is the best.
