I think you don't understand the political climate in the US. While it has changed a little, maybe more than a little, it has not changed for all.
Not this soon, or this quickly.

Still plenty of people here terrified of terrorists. Paranoia, of various
kinds, is fairly common. Including some being paranoid about our own
government (which, in my opinion, is pretty justified).

I don't think we feel as peaceful as you seem to think we feel.

I disagree. Only the paranoid are frightened by the world climate (not the US political climate, it's pretty much fine thank you).

Most any (but not all) attacks or major disasters that could or would strike out against this country (USA) in the foreseeable future stand about a 1 in 100 million chance of involving you. And even less of affecting you unless you are paranoid.

Of course, my mental capabilities allow me to forget most of what I read or hear every day, which I suppose helps me. You should try it when you get old. More intrinsic knowledge of the world and it's history and not remembering the daily dose of "breaking news" and it's running list of words designed to keep you at a fever pitch about damn near everything. Any given moment you could be kidnapped, shot, stabbed, mugged, crash in a plane, fall and break your hip (and can't get up) or spill hot coffee on your junk, blown to bits of vaporized in a terrorist attack, get t-boned at an intersection by a drunk driver (especially a teen male) or have an aneurysm blow up in your brain, heart, eye, etc.

Don't know about you, but none of the above has happened to me in 66 years of hangin' out all over the world. Well, I did get t-boned by a cab once at 2 am by a cabbie trying to time the lights in San Francisco. Damn near totaled my MGB, but I was not hurt, even though the witnesses tried to make me stay in the car, which was leaking fuel from a ruptured gas tank.

See.

Bad things (so far) happen to other people in other places.

(Hope this isn't my last transmission on this channel)
