Distances are a fixed, absolute scale but we have a stretchy form of
time.
For instance, I have just arrived back from playing squash after
waiting 15
minutes (on my watch) for a bus that the indicator board told me was

Having been behind the wheel of said buses for six years before I
retired, I'd be willing to bet that as the bus pulled away the
indicator changed to 15 minutes before resetting for the next bus.
Such is our technology today. The central computer can only predict,
and corrects once a time check has passed.
