Also, I'm surprised about the 1280 thing. I've been watching my stats
since I put up the blog and it seems to me that the great majority of
folks visiting my site were set at 1280.

This may well be because those viewing at lower resolution don't come back.
The way to look at it is: How many potential customers can you afford to turn away? There are a *lot* of photographers with web sites out there. The goal should be to take advantage of every customer who has an issue with any of the other web sites. You can make your site look much better at small screen resolutions without making it any worse at large resolution. If that brings in one extra customer, it could be worth thousands of dollars (depending on the customer).
