I'm curious about recommendations about monopod _use_.

My attempts to take pictures while leaving the tripod with the legs
collapsed into a central column have left me convinced that monopod use
must be difficult; there's support for the weight of the camera,
but the whole assembly will wobble left to right and front to back in
ways that are difficult to correct for while manually focusing.

Are proper monopods easier? Is there a mental trick to avoiding the
wobble?
