I don't agree. Greenwich has a long and distinguished industrial history
which started with Henry VIII setting up the dockyards 500 years ago, and
which is only now drawing to a peaceful close. To me the boatyard helps to
give the place texture & continuity, and is part of a counterbalance to the
weight given to the area's royal and naval history. Even that is at risk of
Disneyfication.

The boatyard was established sometime between 1867 and 1894. On my 1867 map
it is just beach, and where my street is there is a field and a little lane
or wall; on the 1894 map there is a boatyard and my street has been laid
out, but there are no houses on it - another 2 years to wait for that.

All things change, and nothing sure doth perish. London is a palimpsest, but
it's a damned shame when they obliterate the richness of the past and
replace it with shallow, money-grubbing nothingness.
