Amtrak rail service between Detroit and Chicago is decent. But you
have to have a bit of time to spare. If it was high-speed rail and
less expensive than air travel, it would be a great thing.

Rail travel was the treat of my 2004 visit to Scotland. All the
major cities
and many of the minor ones were connected by rail.
Of course, they also had comfortable, convenient inter-city bus
