But with my Canon 135 set to infinity, I can still only get focus out to less than a metre. He probably also had some extension tubes built as well (or as Adam suggests a Visoflex rig).

how do you like that lens? In example pictures I've seen the bokeh looks
rather ugly. I'd like to get a 50mm Summilux (again) sometime.

The Summarit? Equivocal. My copy has lots of scratches, so gives a pleasant diffuse glow to the highlights (call it flare or veiling if you like). But, yes, the bokeh is nothing to be fond of, especially in the corners, where it starts to look like a whirlpool. I try to keep it away from spangly backgrounds. Haven't shot with it recently, but here are a few where it worked out ok

I wish I could afford a Summilux, but for now, I'm saving my shekels for the Voigtlander Nokton 50/1.1.
