I've been using a Chevy 2500 4x4 (350 V8) since 2005. It tows like a dream. Prior to that was a Dodge 1500, which did OK, but was a lot more work than the Chevy. I stick with auto transmissions on the tow vehicles due to the higher weight ratings.
