Subject: Big Dumb Tripod
I have, on occasion, come up with what might generously be described
as a solution in search of a problem. Every so often, I luck out and
find the problem.
A while back I came up with the theory that it would be possible to
build a sturdy tripod base for under $50, if one wasn't too worried
about details like weight. It turns out that with an airtool manifold,
some plumbing bits, a chunk of aluminum and a drill and a couple of
taps, you can:

My big dumb tripod has been sitting around for a while. Tonight, I
realized that it would be just about perfect to set up with my bigma,
aimed out my living room window at the bird feeder.
Unfortunately, the head on it isn't so wonderful. It's off a $60
vivitar tripod I picked up some years back and is neither particularly
sturdy, nor particularly easy to use. I think I see a trip to San Jose
Camera in my near future to pick up a Manfrotto ball head.
