Hej Peter. I don't think the camera is faulty. AFAIK, max flash sync. speed is only a property of the shutter, and has nothing to do with the lens.
Maybe something to do with how older flashes work? -Dunno... I have used an AF400-T and the built-in flash together with a M-100/2.8 some times. The only problem I had was that the two flashes didn't communicate, so there were no contrast-control in the camera.
