The only problem is that an OS isn't an interface between hardware and user, it can be, but it doesn't have to be.

OS = Operating System, like e.g. Windows.

"An operating system (commonly abbreviated to either OS or O/S) is an interface between hardware and user; an OS is responsible for the management and coordination of activities and the sharing of the resources of the computer. [...]"

This quote is taking from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operating_system

The free man owns himself. He can damage himself with either eating or
drinking; he can ruin himself with gambling. If he does he is certainly a damn
fool, and he might possibly be a damned soul; but if he may not, he is not a
free man any more than a dog.
