No need for Cotty to be pardoned at all, he was just wagging his tail and I'm wagging mine. Us dogs recognize each other when we meet...
I realized he was making reference to Lassie the dog - I saw a number of Lassie films as a kid and I also vaguely recall about Lassie being lost or away, although I didn't recall the title of this film until now. (I did see it though.)
