A sad story indeed. I looked up the name of the place "Semipalatinsk
polygon" in Google Earth . The scarring of the landscape is visible
even in areas with low-resolution mapping. In particular, I was
shocked to find a nearly circular lake, seemingly inside a volcanic
crater, that was actually a blast site. It must have contaminated the
water supply in the area for generations. :-(
