Have you tried Hugin?  I've only done a few panos, hand held, but I find
it does a pretty good job of assembling panoramas just using the
"Assistant" without worrying too much about selecting control points. 
It's free and worth a look:

That looks fiddly but might be worth a try.  Thanks for the link.
