Hi Paul,
I'm a little late on this, but I saved it to response later.
The scalloped focusing ring can be a pain in the arse. When I shot
action sports, I used rubber bands around the focusing ring to get some
traction and better position. I used the same technique on my 6X7.
Aside from that, the old Takumars are in a league of their own.
Fortunately, they are inexpensive on the use market and well below the cost
of inferior optics of some name brand manufacturers - even Pentax.
The market is now "consumer optics", where price is the name of the game
and quality is "what does it take, cost/advertising". There are some
sleepers out there and one that comes to mind is the Tokina manual focus 17
mm SL/RMC.
If you must buy new, be prepared to spend 2 to 3 X the price that is
common. You will have the lenses for a life time as they are not of the
"disposable type" - in our increasing "disposable world".
Have another beer, Bob.
Good night,
Bob
