Yep it is soft. This shot did remind me of my Tammy SP 70-120 3.5-4 Macro 1:2 (long name heh?). Took it outside and took a couple shots... soft. :(
I thought it was a bit better but well .. John, as you can see, even a old but high end macro (1:2) zoom is quite soft. Considering this, I think the result you got is very acceptable, taking your lens into account.
