Hi all,

Sasha asked what I thought about the DA*55/1.4 and the Voigtlander 58mm/1.4 SLII. Tonight, I took both out on a date (along with the 77mm Ltd as chaperone). Here's my kiss 'n tell.

The DA*55 is no doubt a fine lens, and a great performer in low light. Normally, I shoot manual focus in these situations, but I have no problem letting SDM do the work once in a while. The flare control is unsurprisingly stellar, especially with the impressive hood in place. Sharpness in these situations is not really a high priority but it certainly is up there with the 77mm (I'm not a sharpness fetishist anyway)

The Voigtlander 58 is a little more flare prone, not just because the well-made but shallow metal hood doesn't help that much. But I had no serious shots were lost because of it, so 'meh' on this one. The best thing about it is the manual focus feel. I like buttery (though not too heavy) helicoids and solid end-stops, so this is where the DA* looses out. The DA necessarily feels a little loose here. I just have a little easier time follow-focusing with the CV.

I hardly ever go to a gig without the 77. And while I only took a handful of frames with it tonight, I'm glad I didn't break the habit.

Here are the pics. I'm not telling which lens shot which, I don't think it matters. It would be like saying which one of my dates is my favourite. I had a great time with all 3 of them (and you can't make critical judgements from webs-size photos anyway).

...oh, the music. Caitlin Park is great. She has a lovely throaty voice and a terrific stillness to her songs. More bands should have cute melodica players, methinks. Tom Cooney reminds me of Fleet Foxes - very sweet. Laura Jean, the headliner....my judgement is still out. I'm not a big fan of worthy-cause music. And I think her songs need a little more variety. But it was still a very enjoyable set.
