A while back I picked up one of these gel holders: http://www.gelholder.com/
When I'm shooting at a dance where there's enough light to use a flash without blinding people, I'd have problems with different color balance between the people lit by the flash, and everything lit by ambient light. I used it last night at the Gaskells victorian ball, and it seems to work pretty well. There does seem to be a bit of an art, or at least a skill, in picking the right gel to match the room. Does anyone have any suggestions? Always use the 8441 (or whatever) swatch for indoor light? Shoot a whitebalance on a greycard on ambient light and keep switching the gels until one gives the same reading? -- The first step is learning to take great photos, the second step is learning to throw away ones that are merely good.
