Why be constrained by camera format?

Matting with a half to full inch reveal allows a variety of formats to
look nice inside many different proportions of mats.

Cutting your own mats is no big deal, either. A decent cutter is thirty bucks or so, and you'll also need a couple or four clamps, a big metal straightedge/ruler, and a pencil. If you don't have a workshop or workbench, add a decent sized (maybe 24" x 36" - 60 x 90 mm) cutting mat to protect your work surface from the cutter blades. It's not any cheaper than pre-cut mats of standard sizes, but you can cut any reveal you want so you can do stuff (a) exactly the way you want it and (b) in sizes and/or shapes that aren't available pre-cut.
