Don't know why. :-) The wooden "mallets" (I don't know what the Tibetans call them) are used to 'voice' the bells: you don't strike them, you rub the "mallet" around the outside which sets up a resonant vibration and causes the bell to sing. The sound is truly beautiful, particularly when you have a couple of the bells with compatible tones: it fills an audio space with little sense of direction. > Wish I were closer to SF - I'm sure I could learn a ton at your workshop!
