Hi, Brendan, Brubeck was criticized for all those things - as you said, unfairly. One of the criticisms that I read of him is that his "European" classical influences, including his unusual time signatures moved jazz away from it's "roots"; that he played a "white" jazz (please excuse the racial reference - I don't agree with the assessment, I'm passing on what I've read in more than one place), and catered to white middle-class college students.
Truth is, I think he was criticized because he was popular. He sold boatloads of albums, and continues to do so. I could be wrong, but I would guess that after Davis' "Kind of Blue", "Take Five" is probably the best selling jazz album of all time, or pretty damn close.
