It's largely a matter of understanding the difference. There's no reason why
photography shouldn't be an art medium like oil paint, papier mache or
elephant dung. There's nothing sacred about it.

I went to a talk by Tim Page a few years ago, full of high hopes and
expectations, but it was a dull evening. He's frankly not a very good
photographer. His story is interesting, but it was a disappointing evening. 

A much more interesting and better photographer from that period was Philip
Jones Griffiths, whom I saw at about the same time I saw Tim Page.
Unfortunately you've missed your chance to hear him.

Page and Griffiths have a number of pictures of the same scene - they were
obviously standing next to each other when they took the same picture. It's
very interesting to compare them. A prime example is
