The only reason I can see, and it is a good one, are the single harvest seeds. Since agriculture began farmers have planted their fields with the best seeds saved from the previous years harvest. Lots of farmers don't do that any more. It's easier to just buy seed for the new crop, but the seeds that are sterile the generation after you buy them really are a work of evil.
