I don't like neckstraps either, but, they can save the camera
from a fall so I usually use a neckstrap at its longest
extension and always hold the camera in my hands, as you do.
That way the weight of the camera is never on my neck unless
something or someone causes me to drop it.  It becomes a camera
safety belt that way.  Shooting at weddings and the associated
receptions can be jostling events, the drunker folks get.
