Yes, when you use an extension tube you lose the ability to focus to infinity; and yes it does increase the magnification of the lens. But, if you want to focus closer than the lens is capable of doing without the extension tube, another way of doing it is with a close-up lens. Given the large filter diameter of the 300/4 A*, this could be hard to find and pretty expensive, too. The only cheaper option would be to really stop down the lens to f/16 or smaller, and use a tripod, so depth of field has a chance to cover closer than you can actually focus.
