So what should I do?
I don't want to process the stuff myself.
I do like checking prints or scans for good shots.
I've had 5x7's made before to check them.
Do I have to send the film to NYC?
Can I get better scans at a competitive price and do some home printing?

I don't have time to read all the 1271 msgs in my PDML mailbox right now, but here's what I do when in your situation. I use the low-res scans to find the best shots, maybe one or two per roll, maybe less. I take those negs or slides and have a pro drum scan made of those for printing, or mounting if a slide, for projection. or to use the digital scan as a basis to make a huge mounted print.

Gets rid of the chaff, and puts the money into the wheat.

The services you need should be available in NYC, Chicago, and LA. Ask around. If you want to delude yourself that's it's being done locally, have a local camera store ship it for you. Not everything is being done digitally yet, or firms wouldn't be buying film enough to keep the production lines going. Look to the scientific community. Universities. Stock shot houses, who may be having scans made of older slides or negs, even prints, to update their wares to online. Anyone who has the equipment running has to have an experienced operator running it. Ask Adobe where they get their work done., GE, GM, Northrup Grumman. Make some friends in the big corporate labs.
