Check out "Strobist" - you can take corrugated cardboard and cut it into thin strips. Glue the faces together to make a "honeycomb" grid.

The width of the strips determines the thickness of the resulting "honeycomb" which affects the angle of the light spread.

You can also do it with short segments of drinking straws glued together.
