If you capture using RAW-DNG format in-camera, and they're not
compressed, you can re-save them as DNG with DNG Converter or
Lightroom or Camera Raw which will apply lossless compression to
reduce their size at which point they are the same size as the PEF
files.

The only real reason to capture in PEF format nowadays is to reduce
size on the camera storage card and allow for more exposures per card.
There are no downsides that I am aware of to in-camera DNGs other than
that.
