It's certainly not a bad compromise. The overall effect is nice.
Of course if you look at contemporary fashion photography,
anything goes. The end result is all that counts. Even Richard
Avedon, who might be considered the father of modern fashion
photography, engaged in some distinctly over the top looks,
including ultra high contrast and blown highlights.
He & other well know 'artists' can get away with stuff like that
because of their name.
True to a certain extent. But extremism is not always ineffective.

My point was that a lesser known individual, regardless of the
'extremism', is less likely to have his 'extreme' work accepted.
I agree with that. Viewing the Avedon exhibit, we frequently remarked
how many of the pics would have been harshly critiqued if posted to a
web photo group. I doubt that more than a couple would have made it
into the Pentax Gallery. No smiley.
How closely photography approximates real life tonal values
shouldn't always be the basis on which the work is judged. Impact
counts.
