DAM> Strangely enough the Pentax web site doesn't have a picture of this lens. DAM> B&H does.. and while looking for it I found that the 800/4 is about US$4000 DAM> cheaper than the 800/6.7 and I have no idea why...
The SMC Takumar 800/4 is rather "old" design using 6 elements on 6 groups, without any fancy ED glass and manual diaphragm. It's also almost none telephoto at all, being 62cm long (add to this the lensmount-film distance, and you have abuot 70cm length of 80cm focal length lens). OTOH, the SMC Pentax M* 800/6.7 ED IF is using 10/9 el/gr design, with fancy ED glass and inner focusing, with auto diaphragm. I would guess the Pentax is much more free from chromatic aberration, and could be as sharp wide open @6.7 as the Takumar is stopped to 6.7. Of course, that is only assumption on my part from the info I have. But I guess you are asking out of curiosity too, or not? Do you really want to buy such a lens ;) ?
