Hi Jack:
Mark Twain loved Lake Tahoe. When seeing Lake Como during his European
travels, Twain remarked: "It [Como] certainly is clearer than a great many
lakes, but how dull its waters are compared with the wonderful transparence
of Lake Tahoe! I speak of the north shore of Tahoe, where one can count the
scales of a trout . . . " And later: "Tahoe for a sea in the clouds; a sea
that has character, and asserts it in solemn calms, at times, at times in
savage storms; a sea, whose royal seclusion is guarded by a cordon of
sentinel peaks that lift their frosty fronts nine thousand feet above the
level world; a sea whose every aspect is impressive, whose belongings are
all beautiful . . . "
The above is from he's travel book *Innocents Abroad*; Twain mentions Lake
Tahoe again in his later travel book, *Roughing It*: "We slept in the sand
close to the water's edge, between two protecting boulders, which took care
of the stormy night-winds for us. . . . While smoking the pipe of peace
after breakfast we watched the sentinel peaks put on the glory of the sun,
and followed the conquering light as it swept down among the shadows, and
set the captive crags and forests free. We watched the tinted pictures grow
and brighten upon the water till every little detail of forest, precipice
and pinnacle was wrought in and finished, and the miracle of the enchanter
complete."
Lovely photographs, Jack!
Cheers, Christine

Subject: PESO: Lake Tahoe Grabs
Wife and I took a drive to 6000 ft elevation Lake Tahoe (CA) today to get
some fall air, see what leaves might be hanging on and do lunch. Prox 225
miles round trip.
Shot these near Crystal Bay, one of the remaining all too few "natural"
areas. Fairly straight forward stuff.
No fall elements.
Comments enthusiastically welcomed.
Jack
