Hi gang. I'm sure there will be more than one answer/comment but i'm
interested in your input on this.
Because of the family wedding i'm doing next July, i went out and
bought a second Nikon SB800 flash, one to have a spare
and two, to use as an off camera, wireless fill light. Paid just as
mush for the used one as i did for the new one. :-(
Any way, i now have some portrait shots lined up for two of my
Managers at the bus company. They have seen a lot of my
photos and asked if i could do some boyfriend/girlfriend and or
husband and wife stuff. I want to get better at this, so i have
agreed.
Now, the question(s) are this.
If i'm doing this inside their homes, (and i don't have any
backdrops), i was thinking of having both flashes set up on tripods at
45 degree angles and use the pop up as commander. Do you think this is
a good way to start or would it be better to have one light on the
angle and use an on camera speed light as the master.
The "standard" multi-light setup I learned is the main light off to one
side [45 deg H/45 deg V] with the fill from behind the camera.
I really like this guy's how-to videos on You Tube. I think they're very
informative.

For what you're looking for, I'd start with episodes 12, 13 & 14.
He shows you how he's setting it up and then shows you how it affects
the results.
He's got a whole lot more videos that go into studio setup, shooting
outdoors, how to make your own stuff, some photoshop magic and how to
get the most from the equipment you've already got.
When i did the family Simpson photos in August, it was cloudy and i
used one flash on the camera with the supplied softbox as fill and it
seemed to give the photos a slight "punch", so i want to utilize this
for the portraits. My safety manager, the one that helped me in my
quest to get my old run back, has a nice cottage style house, painted
white and red on about 10 acres with a nice hard wood bush in the
back. I figure the dual fill flash would be helpful here to help add
some "punch". They also ride motorcycles so i thought maybe a few with
the bikes.
I;ll try some inside and out side of their home, just looking for
suggestions from the portrait crowd and those that use off camera
flash.
I' will be practising here, and will have a look at Stroblist.

It's another really good site, although you may have to spend a while
digging through the archives to find what you want right now.
You might also want to take a look at Dean Collins' Tinker Tubes:

And then on to Software Cinema's other offerings.
